About the event

Ever wanted to try backpacking but didn't know where to start?

This overnight adventure is designed specifically for beginners who want to learn the basics of backpacking in a supportive, hands-on setting—without jumping straight into a demanding multi-day trek.

We'll spend the night in the Woodridge Primitive Park area at Clinton Lake, hiking approximately 4.2 miles total through forest, open fields, rocky terrain, and along the shoreline. With moderate elevation changes and some rocky footing, the trail offers enough challenge to feel like a real backpacking adventure without making the physical demands the focus of the trip.

The goal isn't to see how much distance we can cover. The goal is to learn how to do this.

You'll learn practical skills throughout the weekend, including how to pack your backpack, set up camp, filter water, prepare backcountry meals, use a backpacking stove, and practice Leave No Trace principles.
