One of the more unique outdoor hobbies I have been fortunate enough to experience, is rappelling. The first event for Wander Woman Kansas was partnering with the Kansas City Area Grotto, a local organization that is involved in the exploration and survey of cave systems throughout the state of Missouri.
This event was open to families that included a foraging class, camping, rappel workshop, and a taste of Kansas and Missouri flavors.
I would suggest to anyone that has never tried to rappel, to give it a try at least once in your life. It is such a rush at first, but once you have made it down it is a sense of a huge accomplishment then you are hooked!
Our first evening once everyone got their campsites set up, was a short hike to forage. We learned to forage for redbuds, wild violets, and found a few morel mushrooms.
Everyone came together both nights to enjoy a big feast of local game and homemade hors d'oeuvre foraged in Missouri.
The first day consisted of the rappel workshop. We had set up three stations for everyone to have a chance to experience and learn. First stop was the bunny slope, intermediate slope, and the advanced that consisted of a 100 foot cliff that you had to ascend in order to get back up.
This event wouldn't have been possible without the support and enthusiasm from our dear friend Pic Walenta. RIP Pic. We miss you everyday.
Everyone had an amazing time, and we can not wait to work with the Kansas City Area Grotto for another event.
